Eight Portland Startups: One Demo Day

A couple weeks ago I photographed the first Demo Day event on behalf of the Portland Incubator Experiment (PIE). Each of the eight startups that comprise PIE’s inaugural class took to the stage at Portland’s Bagdad Theater, explaining their company, product, and vision. With my full set of images having been delivered to the client over a week ago, I wanted to post a few of my favorites and offer a few additional selections.

But wait, there’s more!

Bored Occupy Portland Protester: 2011 in Five

I’m sharing five memorable images from 2011 this week. Here’s the final image of the series.

Occupy Portland Bored Protester

The Occupy movement drew attention across the nation this fall and Portland was no exception. I photographed protesters and police a few times (including the night of threatened eviction). This image stands out as one of both visual interest and emotional interest. Photographed during the one-day occupation of Jamison Square in Portland’s Pearl District, this man seems rather apathetic to his surroundings.

Scott Kveton and Sam Adams at PIE Launch: 2011 in Five

I’m sharing five memorable images from 2011 this week. Here’s the third of the series.

Urban Airship's Scott Kveton & Portland Mayor Sam Adams

September marked the public launch event for the Portland Incubator Experiment, a startup incubator being operated by Weiden & Kennedy. As the event began, I noticed Urban Airship CEO Scott Kveton and Portland Mayor Sam Adams standing to one side of the stage just before the ribbon-cutting festivities. In addition to the PIE launch event, I’ve been making images over the past several months of the various startups operating in the PIE space as part of a personal project. I look forward to sharing the results of that effort early in 2012.

Join Me for a Portland Photowalk on June 3rd

On June 3rd I’ll be leading a photowalk in Portland. The Open Source Bridge conference is happening at the Portland Art Museum, and given the geek/photographer crossover that’s often seen, I decided it would be fun to lead a photowalk.

We’ll be leaving from the Portland Art Museum at 18:00, walking through downtown and possibly ending up down near the waterfront where the Rose Festival carnival should be underway. After walking and shooting for a while, we plan to wrap up at a bar or other venue where we can chat, have a beverage, and talk photography.

I’d love to have you join us. Any further details or updates will be posted on the Open Source Bridge site.

Ignite Portland 6 – Coming Thursday

I’m excited to be the official photographer for Ignite Portland, now in its sixth iteration this coming Thursday at the Bagdad Theater. Ignite events (held worldwide) feature a fast-moving format with interesting speakers on a variety of topics… all exactly 5 minutes long. Portland’s events are held at the Bagdad which provides a great setting (and some photographic challenges with interesting lighting).
