Almost Pitch Time for PIE

Over the past few months, eight startups have been growing as part of the Portland Incubator Experiment in one corner of Weiden + Kennedy’s building in Portland’s Pearl District. Next week, founders will deliver demonstrations and pitch their companies as worthwhile investments for continued funding and growth. Here’s a photo of JR Storment delivering a practice version of his talk about Cloudability, a Portland startup focusing on helping businesses manage cloud-based services.

I’ve enjoyed photographing the various founders and activities at PIE as the companies have evolved. I look forward to photographing the PIE Demo Day next week and continuing to follow these businesses into the future. If you’re interested in having me help capture the people, events, and products that make your business interesting, please contact me.

Scott Kveton and Sam Adams at PIE Launch: 2011 in Five

I’m sharing five memorable images from 2011 this week. Here’s the third of the series.

Urban Airship's Scott Kveton & Portland Mayor Sam Adams

September marked the public launch event for the Portland Incubator Experiment, a startup incubator being operated by Weiden & Kennedy. As the event began, I noticed Urban Airship CEO Scott Kveton and Portland Mayor Sam Adams standing to one side of the stage just before the ribbon-cutting festivities. In addition to the PIE launch event, I’ve been making images over the past several months of the various startups operating in the PIE space as part of a personal project. I look forward to sharing the results of that effort early in 2012.

Elected to the PMPA Board of Directors

PMPA LogoYesterday the membership of the Portland Metropolitan Photographer’s Association (PMPA) elected a new board of directors for the coming year; I’m pleased to announce that I’ve been elected to a position on the board. I will be serving as the Social Director.

The PMPA is the local affiliate of the Professional Photographers of America; our group provides professional development and networking opportunities that allow photographers to strengthen their photography and business skill. We have a good mix of some returning board members as well as a few new faces and I’m looking forward to working with the group’s leadership to increase the social opportunities for interaction and photography.

If you’re a photographer in the Portland area and not yet a member of PMPA, please join me for an upcoming meeting. Drop me a note and I can provide more information.

No Rocks Under Stone

Looking west into a covered walkway near the Mosier Twin Tunnels in the Columbia River Gorge

Last weekend I was in the Columbia River Gorge on a family camping trip and we hiked into the Mosier Twin Tunnels. On the west end of the tunnels is this concrete structure designed to prevent any falling rocks from impacting hikers. It was a very moody, grungy-looking place.

Beer and Blog Photos – Last night in Portland

Some of the crowd at the Google-sponsored Beer & Blog on 2/18/11

Last night Google Hotpot sponsored Beer & Blog Portland, a weekly gathering of bloggers and techies. It seems the crowd always increases in size when the drinks are sponsored and last night wasn’t an exception. It was good to chat with friends old and new and of course I created some photos. It was a good exercise in low-light indoor event photography.
