Ignite Portland 8 in Photos

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing Ignite Portland 8 at Portland’s historic Bagdad Theater. The Ignite events are always fun, with a variety of fast-paced presentations on all sorts of crazy subjects. This event lived up to that description with topics including barbershop singing, makerbots, and pants-less comedians.

Ignite at the Bagdad is always a photographic challenge – the theater is very dark and I’m shooting without any strobes. Here are a couple images from the event, as well as my sponsor message. The event sponsors are featured in 30 second videos… I came on board rather last-minute, but I was able to put together a quick video for Hockley Photography.

A Picture of Ignite Portland

Wednesday night is the eighth iteration of Ignite Portland. If you’ve never been to an Ignite event, I definitely recommend finding one in your area and attending. The presenters have five minutes to give their talk, accompanied by a slide deck of 20 slides that automatically advance every 15 seconds. It’s a challenging format for the speakers (I’ve given two Ignite talks… one on social network terms of service and one on railroad photography) and the presentations are nearly always top-notch.

I’m excited to be the in-kind photography sponsor for Ignite Portland 8. This will be the fifth time I’ve been the official photographer, and it’s always an interesting event from a photo standpoint since the theater is very dark with a variety of lighting in play. If you’re at the event (and especially if we’ve never met in person), be sure to say hello! I’ll be the guy wandering around with the cameras…

Favorite Five from 2008

This time of year it seems that everyone is compiling their “Best of 2008″ lists, so I figured I’d jump onto the bandwagon and offer up five of my favorite photos from 2008, presented in no particular order. I’ve got one more coming in a followup post.

Full House
Full House – this was Ignite Portland 2, the first of three Ignite events I photographed this year. I’ve really enjoyed capturing various Portland events in photos as well as all of the amazing people that have brought together a vibrant group of communities around the Portland tech scene.

Into the Wild Red Yonder
Into the Wild Red Yonder – taken at a Flickr meetup at Pittock Mansion, there was a great sunrise and fortunately there was some air traffic taking off to the east.

Another World
Another World – a photo taken at the Oregon Convention Center of some light reflecting against a stainless steel escalator wall. This represents a good example of some of the fine art photos that I take while wandering through everyday life.

Crystal
Crystal – I wanted to build up my portfolio and talked to an acquaintance about a photoshoot… she agreed and it was a fun afternoon wandering northwest Portland resulting in a bunch of great images.

Empty Transit
Empty Transit – taken on a day of railfanning with a buddy, I like the various converging lines and the emptiness seen at the Sunset Transit Center.

Were these my “best” photos? I don’t know. Who defines best? They’re a good cross-section of my photography this year. I didn’t include some portrait work that was hard to rate, but here’s to a happy new year and a 2009 full of good photo opportunities.
