Eight Portland Startups: One Demo Day

A couple weeks ago I photographed the first Demo Day event on behalf of the Portland Incubator Experiment (PIE). Each of the eight startups that comprise PIE’s inaugural class took to the stage at Portland’s Bagdad Theater, explaining their company, product, and vision. With my full set of images having been delivered to the client over a week ago, I wanted to post a few of my favorites and offer a few additional selections.

Dr. Paresh Patel of VendScreen speaks about his company’s device (shown to the right) which aims to add smart capabilities to vending machines. VendScreen has been getting some press from little publications like USA Today.

Ryan Stoner of MoPix explains how he aims to add new innovations to the current film distribution models.

Lauren Wolff pitches Spotsi as a great solution for learning about a location from knowledgeable people who want to share their insider information.

Almost Pitch Time for PIE

Over the past few months, eight startups have been growing as part of the Portland Incubator Experiment in one corner of Weiden + Kennedy’s building in Portland’s Pearl District. Next week, founders will deliver demonstrations and pitch their companies as worthwhile investments for continued funding and growth. Here’s a photo of JR Storment delivering a practice version of his talk about Cloudability, a Portland startup focusing on helping businesses manage cloud-based services.

I’ve enjoyed photographing the various founders and activities at PIE as the companies have evolved. I look forward to photographing the PIE Demo Day next week and continuing to follow these businesses into the future. I’m sharing five memorable images from 2011 this week. Here’s the third of the series.

September marked the public launch event for the Portland Incubator Experiment, a startup incubator being operated by Weiden & Kennedy. As the event began, I noticed Urban Airship CEO Scott Kveton and Portland Mayor Sam Adams standing to one side of the stage just before the ribbon-cutting festivities. In addition to the PIE launch event, I’ve been making images over the past several months of the various startups operating in the PIE space as part of a personal project. I look forward to sharing the results of that effort early in 2012.

Balloon Burn at Liftoff: 2011 in Five

I’m sharing five memorable images from 2011 this week. Here’s the second of the series.

I love doing event photography in Portland, Seattle, and other areas. In June I attended an event in Santa Rosa California; I was able to create images documenting a morning at the Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic. In this image we see a balloon crew just after liftoff; brilliant flames are warming the air as the craft begins to soar into the sky. I was quite pleased with the flames, the sunlight angle, and the look on the crew member’s face as he gazes back towards the ground.

I’ll be sharing five memorable images from 2011 this week. It was challenging to narrow the year down to five images since there are so many more memories and stories that didn’t make the cut. That said, let’s get started; I’ll be presenting the images in the order they were made.

As a photographer involved with the community surrounding the WordPress blogging software, I attend a few events each year to share my blog knowledge with others, pick up some new tips for myself, and interact with the community. At WordCamp Seattle in April, I made photos of a bunch of folks including WordPress core developer Andrew Nacin. It was great to meet him in real life after having only previously interacted online and I enjoyed creating photos of the various attendees including Nacin.
